Industrial Design Law, Government Sends Inventory of Problems to DPR

Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna H. Laoly accompanied by Director General of Intellectual Property Freddy Harris and Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto conveyed the Presidential Statement on the Draft Law (RUU) on Industrial Design to Commission VI of the Indonesian Parliament at the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta on Monday ( 15/07/2019).

 

This working meeting has the agenda of submitting mini-faction views on the deliberations of the Industrial Design Bill. Where this bill is to renew Law Number 31 of 2000 concerning Industrial Design (UU Desain Industri) which is deemed less relevant to current developments.

 

Yasonna said that the amendment of the Intellectual Property Law (KI) was a form of government support to increase the competitiveness of national industries and to accommodate the interests of small and medium industries in obtaining IP protection.

 

"The higher the IP registration in a country, be it Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, and Industrial Designs, the better the country's economic growth," he said.

 

According to him, there are several main changes from the previous law, including changes in the definition of industrial designs and the period of protection of industrial designs.

 

"In addition, other changes include a substance examination of the novelty of Industrial Design, the Industrial Design Appeal Commission, and the use of HDI in multimedia facilities to respond to developments in information and communication technology," he said.

 

The chairman of the meeting who was also Deputy Chairperson of Commission VI DPR RI Dito Ganinduto conveyed that all factions agreed that the Industrial Design Bill would proceed to the first level discussion and asked each faction to immediately compile an Inventory List of Problems (DIM) to move on to the next discussion.

 

"We will discuss the DIM with the government in the DPR," said Dito.

 

On the same occasion, the Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartaro expressed his gratitude for the views of the factions in Commission VI who had approved the DI Bill to be proposed for further discussion.

 

The presence of the Industrial Design Bill is expected to advance industry in Indonesia so that it is able to compete in the sphere of national and international trade.
